📢 September release notes

This month we focused on collaboration, time-based exploration and map comparison.

Map Commenting

Collaborate directly on maps with comment threads.

  • Add comments with pins on the map, with reply counts shown on bubbles

  • Comments cluster together when zoomed out, expanding as you zoom in

  • New notifications panel: see unread comments and jump directly to them

  • Filter for unread comments or hide pins as needed

  • Threads marked as read when opened, or clear all from the sidebar

Dashboard Updates

New: Latest Comments & Mentions: Stay on top of recent collaborations and team discussions.

  • View the latest comments across your maps and processing jobs

  • See when you or teammates are mentioned

  • Keep track of ongoing conversations without needing to leave the dashboard

Timeline View

Toggle the new Timeline to filter map data by created date across 2D, 3D, and Media View. (Ultimate plan)

  • Date picker + zoomable slider (minutes → years) with vertical markers showing where data exists.

  • Commenting is enabled in Timeline; annotation created dates are shown in the inspector; non-eligible users see a disabled button with upgrade prompt.

Slide / Spilt Screen View

Split Screen Compare (Ultimate plan)

  • Compare two GeoTIFFs/rasters/DEMs side-by-side with a draggable handle. Includes analytics tracking and feature flag.

Style Vectors by a category field (alphanumeric)

Styling by Category (Vectors): New tab to style vectors by attribute, with quick eye-icon visibility toggles.

  • Single-band colour clamping: Better rendering (e.g., Capella SAR); smoother opacity sliders.

Bug fixes & improvements

  • Smarter 3D zoom: Works reliably for tiles above/below the earth surface; smoother transition back to 2D based on camera angle.

  • Basemap toggle in 3D: Satellite/bank mode switch persists per browser session.

  • Bulk label visibility: Hide/show annotation labels at layer or folder level from the layer tree menu.

⭐️August release notes

This month we rolled out new features like AI Detect, and updates to the dashboard, free trial plans, media and map tools. These updates bring more automation, richer insights, and improved usability across Birdi.

AI Detect for Media

Smarter object detection tools are now available in the media view.

  • Point-based and text-based detection with adjustable confidence thresholds

  • Erase, delete, rename, recolor, hide/unhide detections directly from the side panel

  • Tags can be renamed by double-clicking and colors adjusted with a picker

  • Detection counts now visible in map and table view

  • AI Detect tags and annotations now visible in table view

  • Double-click to rename, or use text prompts for auto-naming

Media View

Media is now easier to browse and interact with.

  • Media view is now full-screen, not a modal

  • Media list displayed on the left for quick navigation

  • Tags, comments (now called Notes), and info shown on the right panel

  • Easily switch between 2D, 3D, and Media view using the bottom bar

Dashboard Updates

The dashboard provides deeper insights into your team’s activity.

  • New Activity Trends chart: track uploads, maps, share links, and processing jobs by day, week, month, or year

    • See peak activity times and your most active team members

    • Six new overview widgets: team members, guest collaborators, active workspaces, maps created, files uploaded, and storage used

    • Two new tracked actions: new map folder creation and moving maps to folders

    • Improved UI: wider sidebar for folder names and updated section order

Circle Annotation

Draw and measure circular areas directly on your maps with full control.

  • Create circles with adjustable radius and diameter

  • Inspector shows area, perimeter, diameter, and radius values

  • Circles display in table view for easier management and analysis

  • Duplicate and edit existing shapes to quickly build multiple circles across your map

  • Fully integrated with existing annotation tools for a consistent workflow

Bug fixes & improvements

  • Zoom directly to media or annotation items from table view

  • Plan trials are now 7 days (previously 14)

  • 360 images: Fixes issues with horizon curvature and voids at the top of panoramas

  • Vector styles now categorized by geometry type (points, lines, polygons) with updated UI for an easier styling workflow

👩‍💻 July release notes

A huge month with the launch of new plans and pricing, major improvements to the dashboard, and enhanced map organisation tools. Many backend and developer-focused enhancements were also rolled out to support stability and future scaling.

A redesigned workspace dashboard is now live

  • Header: Search maps by name directly from the top.

  • Latest Maps: Recently created or updated maps with quick access to files.

  • Maps Coverage: Visual map coverage globe with suburb-based filtering.

  • Processing: Status of current jobs displayed in one place.

  • Team Activity: Track team actions like uploads, invites, or processing completions.

Map folders, filters & table view

Easier organisation and browsing of maps

  • Create folders to group and manage maps.

  • Move maps between folders without removing them from the “All Maps” list.

  • Rename/delete folders from the sidebar.

  • New table view option to switch from cards to rows.

  • Filters expanded with new options: filter by folder or map creator.

Media & upload enhancements

Smarter handling of uploads and positioning

  • Upload documents (PDF, DOCX, XLSX, etc.) with a new feature flag.

  • 360s, videos, and non-drone media can now be manually geolocated.

  • Block 0-byte or corrupted files from being uploaded or processed.

  • Failed uploads now appear clearly in the interface, with processing blocked until resolved.

  • Bug fix for video duplication in EXIF handling.

  • Satellite imagery source switched from Bing to AWS Location Services for reliability.

Bug fixes & improvements

  1. Fix for ZIP downloads on some items.

  2. Hide zoom buttons when no content available.

  3. Download icon now appears on downloadable layers.

  4. Improved support for uploading videos with EXIF data.

  5. Minor UI refinements in maps cards and dashboard side menu.


👩‍💻 June release notes

This month focused on improvements and reliability upgrades across uploads, 3D views and vector handling. New Plans & Pricing went live. Several key bug fixes also landed.

    • 3-band rasters without transparency now accepted as multiband

    • Improved CRS detection for raster uploads

    • Fixed vector file uploads with spaces in the name not appearing on the map

    Vector styling

    • New point radius and line weight controls in both "Style by Type" and "Style by Field" tabs

Plans & Pricing

New plans & pricing released

  • New plan launches with updated inclusions

  • Offical launch of Birdi 2.0 map UI

  • Better visibility of plan usage for users

Bug Fixes & Improvements

  • Fixed crash caused by out-of-order map layer events

  • Fixed drag-and-drop of layers into newly created folders

  • Download button now shows for unknown file types with attached media

  • Fixed double OpacitySlider appearing on DEMs




🧑‍💻 May release notes

This month focused on major improvements to raster rendering, point cloud visualization, file upload reliability, and enhancements across Map 2.0. These updates bring more stability, speed, and power to Birdi's platform for handling large geospatial data files.

Raster Tiles with Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG)

Raster imagery is now generated and served using the COG:

  • Faster and more reliable tile streaming for large orthos

  • Supports single-band rasters with color-mapped visualizations (e.g. DTM, DSM)

Layers & Contours

Enhancements to how elevation and contour data are managed and displayed:

  • Contours from new processing jobs now use polylines for each isoline

  • Reduces file size and simplifies table view

  • Existing contours remain unchanged unless reprocessed

Point Cloud Viewer (Advanced)

3D viewer updates boost performance and reliability for point cloud data.

  • Support for .las and classified .las file uploads (renderable only in the Advanced Viewer)

  • New navigation option on right click to view for better user experience

Bug Fixes & Improvements

  • Long map titles now ellipsize gracefully

  • Upload menu now visible above the layer list on mobile

  • Add Layer dropdown no longer overlaps UI elements

  • Improvements to our in-platform chat to better assist users

  • Public share link now correctly loads media for viewers

  • Bulk selecting/dragging large image layers between groups for processing

  • Improvements made to the media selection on 2D map




🧑‍💻 April release notes

New functionality for 3D uploads and viewer access, major updates to how organisations, workspaces and user roles are managed, and some backend polish across the platform.

Upload your own 3D files

You can now upload your own 3D outputs into Birdi using the following formats:

  • .3tz – Optimized tiled 3D model format

  • .zip – Must include a tileset.json file and associated tiles (e.g., .b3dm, .pnts)

3D Viewer Access
The Birdi 3D viewer is available on the Plus plan and above for users who are processing data through Birdi.

Organization & Workspace Updates

Manage your Birdi access more effectively with a simplified structure:

  • Each organisation (your billing entity) can now manage multiple workspaces

  • All workspaces share the same plan benefits: user seats, processing access, and storage (according to your plan)

User Roles & Permissions

Smarter user management across your team
We’ve refined how roles and seats work to better align with your team's needs:

User Seats

  • Your plan includes a set number of user and guest seats

  • Only users with available seats can be assigned platform roles

  • Need more seats? Organisation Admins can request them through your Birdi account manager or via in-platform chat

Bug Fixes & Improvements

  • Annotation Tools: Annotation toolbar layout now adapts when the map name/logo area is too large.

  • Layer Menus: Layer right-click and inspector dropdown menus are now consistent. Fix for rename and edit functions on annotation layers.

We’ve been busy behind the scenes bringing more power, flexibility, and usability to Birdi Map 2.0. This month’s updates include new media tools, improved annotation workflows, enhanced file support, public map sharing, and performance boosts across the board.

  • Metadata in Table View: View EXIF data, comments, and tags directly in the table.

  • Media Viewer Enhancements: Improved full screen experience with tabbed EXIF info and easy paging between media items.

  • Better Performance: Folders with large numbers of media now load more reliably in table view.

Annotations

  • Export Options: Download annotations as KML, Shapefile, GeoJSON or CSV.

  • Improved Editing: Double-click to start or finish editing, and drag to reposition polygons.

  • Colour in Table View: See annotation colours as swatches alongside their hex values.

Layers

  • Layer Actions: Delete confirmation added for better control and fewer accidental removals.

  • 3D/2D Visibility Tooltips: Layers not compatible with the current view show helpful tooltips.

Public Map Sharing

  • Public Map Links (Beta): Share maps with a view-only public link — perfect for stakeholders and external teams.

Processing

  • Updated processing forms: Easier to use form when submitting data for processing, including dropdowns for resolution and default contour spacing.

  • Support for global coordinate systems: Processing now supports multiple coordinate reference systems (WGS84, GDA2020, UTM, and more).

Vector styling

  • Style by Feature Type: Customize styling by points, lines, or polygons (e.g. color, line weight).

  • Style by Data Field: Apply styling based on values in your data (e.g. color gradients for numeric fields).

  • Embedded Styles: Automatically apply styles from embedded attributes in vector files.

Bug Fixes & Performance

  • Media Fixes: Video location display and media text wrapping issues resolved.

  • GeoJSON Stability: Fixed crashes caused by complex table data.

  • Inspector UI: Background color restored for grouped annotation tools.

  • Smarter UI Layouts: Dynamic resizing of tool panels to avoid overlapping buttons and menus.

  • Measurement Settings: Unit preferences (including yards) are now remembered per browser.


🧑‍💻 February release notes

February brought a strong focus on performance, polish, and preparing the groundwork for bigger features to come. This month, we’ve rolled out improvements to the annotation experience, made table views more powerful, and continued to enhance the stability and usability of Birdi Map 2.0.

DXF file uploads

You can now upload DXF files for use in Birdi Map 2.0!

  • Supported format: Upload your DXF file along with a .prj file in a ZIP folder.

  • Includes table view support to visualise metadata.

  • Styling options available for lines, points, and polygons.

Media

  • Full screen media view now includes zoom tools for closer inspection of images and videos.

  • All media types now display metadata, including camera info where available

Tags & comments for media

  • New tabs added in the media layer toolbox to manage tags and comments.

  • Users will be prompted to create a tag if it doesn’t already exist.

  • Comments and tags are synced in real time and visible to all users in your organisation.

  • A notification badge appears on media icons in the map view when they include a tag or comment.

  • Available for all media types: drone imagery, 360°s, videos, and ground-based photos.

Media and layer downloading

You can now easily download media and files directly from Birdi Map 2.0.

  • Single item: Right-click a media item in the layer tree and select Download.

  • Multiple items: Right-click a folder in the tree, select Download ZIP, and receive a download link via email.

  • Multi-select multiple files or folders to download together as a ZIP.

Video uploads

  • Uploaded videos now appear on the map with a video icon for easy location identification.

  • Videos open in the updated media viewer with smooth playback controls.

Base Maps

A Legend tab is now available for layers that include this in their resources.

You can now explore new built-in maps and datasets, including:

  • QLD Lots

  • VIC Lots

  • VIC LGAs

  • VIC PRSA Points

  • VIC Geo Significant Features

  • QLD LGAs

  • QLD Rural Properties

  • Forest Types of Australia

🗒️ Things to Note:

Sharing: Currently all maps are available to all organisation user.
Features: Some new features will be available on a Paid plan only in the full release.

We are continuously adding new features and migrating other from our existing map view. Thank you for testing our new features!
