The Map Grid Overlay is a visual reference layer that helps you quickly understand the scale and size of an area on any map. It places a grid on top of your existing map layers, making it easier to judge distances, coverage, and object density at a glance.
This is especially useful when working with AI Detect tools, where understanding scale helps you choose the right tile size and zoom level for more accurate detections.
What the Map Grid Overlay is used for
The grid overlay helps you:
Visually understand the scale of your map area
Judge object density before running AI Detect
Decide on the best tile size and zoom level for AI models
Quickly sense coverage when reviewing large orthomosaics or sites
It works with any map layer, including orthos, base maps, and AI outputs.
How to turn the Map Grid Overlay on or off
Open any map in Birdi
In the bottom right of the map view you will see a toggle button
Toggle Map Grid on or off
Once enabled, the grid will appear immediately over your map.
Changing grid units (Metric β Imperial)
You can switch the grid units depending on your preference or project requirements.
Open the Settings (βοΈ) menu in the top toolbar
Locate the Map Grid units option
Choose between:
Metric (meters)
Imperial (feet)
The grid updates instantly when the unit is changed.
Using the Map Grid with AI Detect
The Map Grid Overlay works particularly well in conjunction with AI Detect:
Use the grid to assess object size relative to the map scale
Adjust your zoom level to fall within the recommended AI detection range
Make more informed decisions on tile size before running detection
Reduce trial-and-error by visually confirming scale upfront
This helps improve both detection accuracy and processing efficiency.
Tips and best practices
Toggle the grid on during setup, and off again for clean visual reviews
Use the grid when comparing different zoom levels before running AI Detect
Switch to imperial units when working with teams or clients who prefer feet
