How to use global map search in Birdi

Learn how to find any map or dataset across all your workspaces from one globe, so you can move between sites faster.

Written by Kayley Greenland

Finding the right map no longer means scrolling through lists. Global map search shows all your mapped locations and datasets on one globe, across every workspace you have access to.

You can use it to:

  • See every map and dataset you can access in one view

  • Filter results by zooming into an area on the globe

  • Jump straight to a location and open the map you need

  • Narrow results to a single workspace

  • Find older missions from the legacy view as well as new captures

When to use global map search

  • You manage several sites and need to get to a specific one quickly

  • You can’t remember which workspace a map is in

  • You want to see what other datasets exist at the site you’re working on

  • You’re looking for an older capture from before Birdi Map 2.0

  • You want a quick overview of where all your mapped data sits

Search from the dashboard

1. Open global map search

From the dashboard, select Search for a map, location or data search bar (At the top of the screen) to open search. The globe loads with all your datasets.

2. Zoom to filter your results

Zoom into an area on the globe. As you zoom, the list on the right updates to show only the maps and datasets in that area.

Tip: Zoom out to the global view any time you want to start a new search somewhere else.

3. Jump to a location

Click a dataset in the list and the globe moves straight to it.

4. Open a map

  • Double-click a map to open it, or

  • Open it in a new tab with [TBC – e.g. new tab icon / right-click option]

5. Filter by workspace (optional)

If you only want data from one workspace, use the [TBC – workspace toggle label] to narrow your results.

Search from inside a map

1. Open the search panel

Select the dropdown arrow above the map name to open the search panel.

2. See what else is at your site

The panel opens already focused on your current location, so you can see what other datasets exist at the same site.

3. Move to another location

Zoom back out to the global view to find and open a map somewhere else.

Finding older missions

If you’ve been with Birdi for a while, missions from the legacy view also show up in global map search. Older captures are as easy to find as new ones.

Best practice tips

  • Start zoomed out, then zoom in to the region you want. It’s the quickest way to narrow a long list.

  • Use the workspace filter when you share access to many workspaces and only need one.

  • Open maps in a new tab when you’re comparing sites or captures side by side.

  • Search from inside a map to check whether a site has newer or older captures before you start measuring.
