In this article we will explore reference sets and how to utilize them in the Birdi platform to visualize and manage GCP networks, monitor slope stability and create trend reports.

Ground Control networks

Birdi’s reference sets can be utilized to visualize and manage ground control networks.

Comprising a network of precisely measured control points distributed across a region, they serve as reference points for accurately positioning and orienting aerial or satellite imagery, as well as ground-based measurements.

These networks facilitate the establishment of coordinate systems, aiding in the creation of accurate maps during processing.

Slope stability prism monitoring

Birdi’s slope stability prism monitoring utilizes a permanent network or prisms, ground control points and checkpoints at your physical site. These sets are used during processing to:

  • Detect early signs of slope instability

  • Create graphs and make informed decisions by analyzing the stability of slopes, especially in areas prone to landslides or erosion.

How to upload a reference set?

To enable the use of reference sets you will need to ensure you have access to Birdi’s Sites and Reference Sets features.

  1. Ensure you have a site created (Learn more here)

  2. Create a map with objectives (Learn more here)

  3. Assign the map to the relevant site

  4. Select reference sets from the top navigation bar in the map view

5. Populate the reference set form with the relevant details

6. Upload a CSV of the points in the format provided

7. Select confirm

This will save the reference set in the panel. From here you will be able to view them as a layer on our map view, zoom and set the visibility, update their type and export the set.

If you require an additional set such as GCP’s, you can upload another set into the map view following the above steps.

How to use a reference set during processing?

During processing you can select the set you want to request processing with. This is a critical step when needing to generate a trend report using prisms.

  1. During the processing request flow select and tick reference set

  2. Set your coordinate system (This needs to align with what your set is in)

  1. Select add reference set (A reference set can be GCP’s or prisms)

  2. Ensure the correct site is selected

  3. Select a reference set from your pre saved list

  4. Select Confirm

If you need to also include another set, you can add more following the above steps.

5. The set summary will appear in the panel to review your selection

6. Select Next

7. Review your processing summary and select request processing

How to create a trend report?

Once your reference set (prisms) have been used during processing you will be able to create a trend report. Learn how to create your report here.
